Email Marketing Tips for 2018

Email Marketing is Still the Best Conversion Tool in Online Marketing.

If you don’t have an email list then you don’t have an online business and that’s a FACT.

Email is 40% better for conversions than social media like Facebook or twitter.

The goal of an email list is to build a hyper responsive list which is the exact opposite of what most people do in order collecting peoples email address.

You are better off having 1000 engaged fans than 5000 subs who only gave you their email address for a freebie.

Stating that a free guide is in some way a bribe, is not the right way to start a relationship.

That’s what email marketing is, the act of building a relationship.

I hate it when people say the money is in the list, it’s not, it’s in the relationship and that takes time to build and nurture.

There are many people with huge email lists with poor open rates and even worse, low click through rates.

Reasons for poor open and click through rates:

  • Blast people with pop ups before they get to read anything
  • Use single opt ins
  • List swapping
  • Not using first name field

Why I Don’t Like Pop Up’s

You hear it all the time in the world of Internet Marketing, I hate to admit it but using pop ups do tend to work.

You may get more subscribers but are they quality subscribers?

Getting someone’s email before they read anything you have written, bribing them with some cheap report is not a good way to start. Overtime they stop opening your emails and your deliverability rate goes way down.

Use Double Opt In

Many marketers know that using single opt in gains more subscribers quickly. This is true.

It is so they can blast them with affiliate offers and make more money early on but they lose more subscribers down the line.

Single opt ins also take in spam emails which you still have to pay for every month! Plus, some countries require double opt ins which if you break the icann laws there are heavy penalties given.

List Swapping

This is not done as much as it used to but it’s still a good reason why you have poor open rates.

Not Using the Name Field

This one is used by newbies in order to gain more subscribers as possible. It works in the sense that the more friction in the opt in process the less likely people will give over their email address.

The downside is many people will give false addresses and even worse you won’t know because you have no first name to check.

For example, if someone gives an email address say, first name JOHN and his email address is JohnFSmith@gmail.com it is more likely to be a genuine address. However, if you receive an email address with no first name such as struadcv123 @gmail.com then how do you really know it is genuine?

At least if they gave a first name you are more in a position to evaluate if they are a genuine sub or not.

Email tips:

Instead of opt in forms on your sites use lead boxes where visitors click on your site to reveal opt in this shows higher conversion rates and creates more space on your website plus giver cleaner look to your site.

Here are a few tips when preparing to perform an email marketing campaign:

  • Offer Quality Content. Be sure to provide excellent content along with your guaranteed promise in order to capture the audience’s attention. Be sure to deliver the content, nothing hurts more than not being able to deliver on quality content after you’ve made promises.
  • Strong Words Work. Make sure to use vocabulary that has an impact and captures attention when the prospective client reads the subject title.
  • Numbers Game. The use of numbers or digits ie: 4, 5 (2-1) tend to stop the eyes from wandering around.
  • Originality Sells It. The more original you come across the more so people will be apt to stop and want to read your email. Intriguing the prospect can be quite an effective tactic.
  • Don’t Be Quirky or Clever. Keep it simple rather than trying to confuse your client. You don’t want someone to have to think too long about your emails purpose, they’re apt to just move on.
  • Try New Things. While we recommend maintaining simplicity, that doesn’t mean it should lack creativity. Creative campaigns are often the best ones. Feel free to test new methods or capture attention with creative titles.
  • Study and Learn. Various mailing lists pay large amounts of money to ensure they’re being provided with the best subject lines that money can buy. Subscribe to some of these lists and learn from them. Don’t copy, draw inspiration.
  • Stats Don’t Always Work. There are ideal statistics people tend to throw out there about how you should use only a certain amount of characters per subject line or how many words per paragraph, etc. None of these are a complete standard and feel free not to adhere to these “rules”.

What is the best email provider?

I can only answer what I use. I have used aweber and still do. I used to use a mailing service that will go unmentioned due to its lack of functionality and discontinued support, but I’ve moved over to MailChimp and have been using them since about 2006. For beginners and people who love blogging and other content marketing I recommend MailChimp.
